This requirement must be satisfied in the first three terms of the program. The requirements can be met by earning a grade of B or better in the class or by passing a waiver exam.

 14.384 Time Series Analysis and 14.385 Nonlinear Econometric Analysis are each counted as two subjects in the 12-subject requirement.

This 12-unit subject must be taken for the fall and spring terms, and IAP of the second year of the program.

Students must select two major fields comprised of two or three full-term subjects offered by the Department of Economics and receive grades of B or better. Fields are development, econometrics, finance, industrial organization, international, labor, macroeconomics, organizational, political economy, public finance, and theory.

Students must select two minor fields comprised of two full semester subjects offered by the Department of Economics and receive grades of B or better. Fields are development, econometrics, finance, industrial organization, international, labor, macroeconomics, organizational, political economy, public finance, theory, and computation and statistics.

The research units given here are based on three years from the general examination requirement to completion of the thesis but will vary depending on how long the student remains in the program. After completing the general examination requirement, students will register for 36 units of thesis research each fall and spring term. They may also register in the summer term but are not required to.
