Operations Research

Operations research (OR) is the discipline of applying advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. Combining rigorous theory with empirical and computational approaches, it uses mathematical modeling, analysis, and optimization to understand systems and design efficient solutions with societal impact. Its applications range from engineering to management, and from industry to the public sector.

Operations research has advanced the mathematics of optimization, applied probability, statistics, and, in the recent years, AI and machine learning. OR researchers have created innovative methods for applications in areas such as operations management, pricing, auctions, and markets. Collaborating with academics and practitioner in related fields, they have contributed to improving transportation and network design, supply chains and service operations, healthcare and life sciences, sustainability and energy systems, and public policy. In today's interconnected and data-rich world, OR's rigorous methods are essential to informed decision-making.

The Operations Research Center (ORC) coordinates a PhD degree and SM degree in operations research, which provide a strong background in OR theory as well as the practical techniques used in building models for a wide variety of applications. In collaboration with the Sloan School of Management, the ORC additionally offers a specialized one-year Master of Business Analytics (MBAn). Founded as an interdepartmental program, the Operations Research Center has maintained its interdisciplinary roots. It reports jointly to MIT Sloan and the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, with faculty from multiple departments.
