Equips students to think analytically about the politics of crime and policing. After introducing key concepts, research methods, and sources of data, students read the latest social scientific research on bias and discrimination, police reform, crime prevention, deterrence and incarceration, and social movements related to crime and policing. Other topics include vigilantism, gender-based violence, terrorism, and organized crime. The class is comparative, with emphasis on the United States and Latin America.
